Things To Know About Trekking in Nepal

1. Is a trekking guide required in Nepal? What if I am an experienced trekker who belongs to a trekking/mountaineering organization in my own country?

Ans: The new rule of 2023 requires the use of a qualified trekking guide. The rule applies to all foreign national trekkers.

3. Is this guideline also valid when hiking around Kathmandu? Or how about Sarangkot? Where do all of these rules apply?

Ans: Only when trekking in places where TIMS is applicable should the Revised Provision for Trekking in Nepal be observed. It is valid in all mountain national park areas. It does not apply to the outskirts of Kathmandu Valley, the outskirts of Pokhara, or trekking areas in and around large cities.

4. Is it necessary for me to go through a trekking agency? Is it acceptable as long as I have a guide?

Ans: Hiring a licensed trekking guide through a government-registered trekking agency is required.

5. How can I tell whether the trekking company is legitimate?

Ans: Trekking guides must be recruited through a trekking agency that is registered with the government. Trekking guide must be hired through government-registered trekking agency. You can verify information on the trekking agency from Department of Tourism and Trekking Agencies Association of Nepal.

6. What will happen if I don't follow this rule?

Ans: Not following the rule is a punishable offense.

7. I am a fast packer and trail runner, and no agency has given guides that can keep up with me. How should I proceed?

Ans: It applies to everyone. You must ensure that the trekking service can supply a guide who meets your individual needs.

8. I am a foreigner residing in Nepal. Is this rule also applicable to me?

Ans: Yes, the restriction applies to both diplomats and expats.

9. What if I take my motorcycle to Muktinath?

Ans: The regulation does not apply to either the motorcycle or bus travel to Muktinath. A TIMS card as well as an Annapurna area pass are necessary.
