How to prepare for the 12 Days EBC trek?

Preparing for the Everest Base Camp (EBC) trek is essential to ensure a safe and enjoyable journey in the high-altitude Himalayan region. The Everest Base Camp Trek is regarded as a moderate to challenging trek ideal for anyone with a reasonable level of physical fitness and mental stamina. Due to the steep ascents and descents on the trails and the elevation, they are challenging.

To prepare for the EBC trek, it's essential to enhance your stamina and leg strength since the journey involves long hours of walking. Regularly engage in activities like walking, hiking, running, or cycling to improve your cardiovascular endurance. Don't forget to include leg exercises to strengthen your muscles. These preparations will enable you to handle the uneven paths and high altitudes during the trek. Keep in mind that you should be ready to walk for about 5-7 hours per day and ascend an average of 300m (1000 ft) in elevation each day.

Hiking serves as an excellent preparation for the extensive walks of the Everest Base Camp trek, offering a gradual way to build body strength and endurance. For beginners or those with limited activity, it's advisable to start with shorter and easier hikes, opting for trails that align with your current fitness level. As you become more comfortable with these initial hikes, gradually increase the distance and difficulty, and explore various terrains to get ready for the diverse landscapes you'll face during the EBC trek. Additionally, incorporating elevation gain hikes helps your body adjust to the uphill climbs and descents that await you on the journey.

A helpful practice is to wear your daypack during your training hikes and gradually increase the weight of its contents over time. Start with a comfortable weight and then add more items gradually until it reaches around 11kg. This will help your body get accustomed to carrying the necessary gear and supplies during the actual trek, making it easier and more comfortable when you embark on your adventure in the high-altitude Himalayan region.

EBC Trek Accommodation and Availability

The availability of teahouses and lodges along the Everest Base Camp trek route has significantly improved in recent years, enhancing the overall trekking experience for adventurers. These accommodations range from basic to high-end, offering a variety of options to suit trekkers with different preferences and budgets. You can find a few well maintained and luxurious hotels till you reach Dingboche.

Teahouses are the most common form of accommodation along the trekking route. They provide basic yet cozy lodging with communal dining areas where trekkers can enjoy local meals and interact with fellow travelers. As you progress towards Dingboche, you'll also find more comfortable lodges with cozy and warm rooms featuring attached bathrooms and hot showers. These amenities make the trek more comfortable, allowing trekkers to rest and relax after a day of walking.

Everest Base Camp Trek Permits

Before embarking on an exciting trek to Everest Base Camp, keep in mind that you'll require two permits: the Sagarmatha National Park Entry Permit and Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality Permit. Both permits are vital for your trekking, so ensure you obtain them prior to commencing your adventure or during your journey. We, Mountain Travel Nepal, will usually take care of the permit arrangements, ensuring you have the necessary documents for your journey.

Best Season for Everest Base camp Trek

The best season to go on the Everest Base Camp Trek is between March and May, and September and December, when the winds are calmer, the days are sunny, the temperatures are mild, and the trail is beautiful, with green dense forests, raging rivers and streams, the soothing sounds of birds and animals, and uninterrupted views of the grand massifs along the way.   During these months, the entire journey becomes even more wonderful.

Arrival Day : Arrival in Kathmandu

You will be greeted by our welcoming staff as soon as you land in Kathmandu, the energetic capital of Nepal. Before your trekking adventure starts, we'll help you with the necessary planning and make sure you have a comfortable stay. Exploring Kathmandu's cultural wonders, such as the Pashupatinath Temple, Swoyambhunath (Monkey's Temple), Boudhanath Stupa, Kathmandu Durbar Square, Bhaktapur Durbar Square, and others, is a great opportunity.

Day 1.  Flight to Lukla (2,840 meters), 30 minutes & trek to Phakding (2,610 meters) 2-3 hours

You start your trek to Everest Base Camp on the first day. You travel from Kathmandu to Lukla on an exciting flight, where you are met by your experienced guide and porters. You begin your trek toward Phakding, a picturesque village located along the Dudh Koshi River, from Lukla, the gateway to Mount Everest. As you travel through charming towns and over suspension bridges decorated with prayer flags, take in the beautiful scenery and learn about Sherpa culture.

Day 2. Trek to Namche Bazaar (3,440 meters) 4-5 hours

The trail takes you to Namche Bazaar, a bustling Sherpa market town and the entrance to the Everest region, as you continue your ascent. The trekking route gradually ascends, providing breath-taking views of Everest and nearby peaks. Namche Bazaar welcomes you with its buzzing atmosphere, inviting teahouses, and breathtaking mountain views. Use this chance to adjust to the altitude and learn about the rich local culture.

Day 3. Acclimatization at Namche Bazaar

Acclimatization is crucial for a successful Everest Base Camp trek. This day is dedicated to adapting to the high altitude and allowing your body to adjust. Explore the surrounding areas of Namche- the capital of the Khumbu Region, visit the Sherpa Cultural Museum or Sagarmatha National Museum and take a short hike to Everest View Hotel for a mesmerizing panorama of Everest, Lhotse, Ama Dablam, and other majestic peaks. Hotel Everest View, which was founded in 1971 and is located at a height of 13,000 feet, is recognized as the highest hotel in the world by the Guinness Book of World Records (2004). The resort has developed into a destination unto itself, appearing in various guidebooks and receiving media attention. You can hike here and have a cup of coffee enjoying a 360 degree view of the Himalayas, appreciating Mt. Everest and many other high mountains from the table. Engage in insightful conversations with fellow trekkers and immerse yourself in the unique mountain atmosphere.

Day 4.  Trek to Tengboche (3,867 meters) 6-7 hours

You travel to Tengboche, which is where one of the most sacred monasteries in the Everest region is located, after leaving Namche Bazaar. Rhododendron forests, alpine meadows, and stunning mountain vistas can all be seen from the trail. A spiritually enlightening experience in the tranquil Himalayan setting can be had by arriving in Tengboche in time for the evening prayer ceremony at the monastery. Tengboche monastery is the biggest monastery in the Everest Region. It is one of the monastery where the sacred festival- Mani Rimdu of the Buddhist is performed every year. This festival is celebrated to mark the founding of Buddhism by Guru Rinpoche Padmasambhava.

In Nepal's Solukhumbu region, the Mani Rimdu Festival is observed at the monasteries of Tengboche, Thame, and Chiwong. These spiritual rituals and activities of empowerment are taking place. Nineteen days of festivities are included, and a three-day public festival marks the end of the celebrations. According to the lunar calendar used in Tibet, the Mani Rimdu celebration is scheduled for a specific date. The Mani Rimdu ceremony is held in Tengboche during the ninth Tibetan month, which typically coincides with the full moon in October or November. Trekking during a festival will be both adventurous and cultural if you can schedule your trip around those times.

Day 5. Trek to Dingboche (4,410 meters) 6-7 hours

As you travel from Tengboche to Dingboche, the trail leads you farther into the Himalayas. This charming community is located in a large valley and provides breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains. Day 6. Acclimatization at Dingboche

You'll stay in Dingboche for an additional day in order to further adapt to the high altitude. Altitude sickness is less likely as a result of your body having time to acclimate to the thinner air. On this day, go around the neighborhood and climb Nangkartshang Peak for stunning vistas of the Khumbu Valley. Immerse yourself in the tranquility of the mountains and savor the unique atmosphere of this high-altitude village. Enjoy the stunning views of Mount Ama Dablam and other Himalayan giants around the Dingboche.

Mount Ama Dablam is one of the most beautiful mountains in the world located in the Everest Region. It is known as the "mother's necklace" because of its long ridges, which resemble the arms of a mother (ama) shielding her child, and its hanging glacier, which is considered to be the dablam, the traditional double-pendant that Sherpa women wear and which features images of the gods. Anyone hiking to Mount Everest Base Camp will see Ama Dablam dominating the eastern sky for several days. Ama Dablam is commonly referred to as the "Matterhorn of the Himalayas" due to its soaring ridges and steep faces. The mountain is featured on the Nepalese banknote for one rupee.

Day 7. Trek to Lobuche (4,950 meters) 5-6 hours

The journey takes you to Lobuche, a little town hidden in the shadows of towering peaks, while you continue your ascent. As you cross glacial streams and negotiate moraines, the terrain gets more difficult. You are moving closer to Everest as you experience the unspoiled landscape and breathtaking sights. Spend some time taking in the landscape's pristine beauty and the neighboring mountains' enormous size.

Day 9. Hike to Kala Patthar (5,644 meters) and trek to Pheriche (4,371 meters) 5-6 hours

You will get up early and start a hike to Kala Patthar in order to see the sunrise over Everest and capture unforgettable views. The Himalayan giants, including Everest, Nuptse, and Lhotse, are visible from this viewpoint of Kalapatthar in a panoramic display. After taking in the breathtaking views, you'll make your way down to Pheriche, a village located in the Khumbu Valley. Take pleasure in the Sherpa community's warmth and hospitality.

Packing List for Everest Base Camp Trek

  • A Down Jacket: If you do not have a down jacket, Mountain Travel can arrange for you to rent one, or you can purchase one for a reasonable price in Kathmandu’s tourist district Thamel.
  • A warm and lightweight feather sleeping bag: If you have a good quality and lightweight warm sleeping bag, it is advisable to bring with you. If you do not have one, Mountain Travel Nepal will provide you one.
  • A Warm Fleece
  • A warm and light-weighted feather sleeping bag (if you do not have MTN will provide you)
  • Long Sleeved T-shirts: We would suggest either wool or synthetic material. Though cotton is very comfortable to wear, it gets wet and cold when you sweat in it, and it takes a long time to dry. Wool will stay warm even when it gets wet, and it does not start to smell bad as quickly as cotton or synthetic material – however, it does take a little longer to dry. Synthetic material is usually quite lightweight, and it efficiently transports the sweat away from your body, and dries quickly. On the downside, it starts smelling quickly and will need to be washed often.
  • T-shirts and/or Vests: Same suggestion as for long sleeved t-shirts.
  • A pair of Shorts: As an alternative to shorts, a pair of zip-off trousers.
  • A pair of Lightweight Trousers: Synthetic or a synthetic/cotton mix preferable.
  • A pair of Long Johns : These are nice to have for chilly evenings in the teahouse or outside the tent especially for altitudes above 4000 meters where it often gets very cold during the night
  • A pair of good walking Boots and good Trekking Socks: Make sure the boots are big enough – if the boots are too small, you will lose your toenails. It is important that your heel is fixed in the boot while at the same time you should have some space in front of your toes. Consider that your feet “grow” during the day. Consider whether you will use both inner socks (liners) and trekking socks or only one pair of socks.
  • A pair of Sandals or Flip-flops: It’s always a great feeling to take off your boots at the end of a long trekking day and walk around barefoot in your sandals around camp. They are also easier to get in and out of if you have to go to the loo during the night.
  • Rainproof Jacket: The weather can change rapidly in the Himalayas and a sunny day can quickly turn into a rainstorm or even a snow storm. A light jacket with low packing volume is preferable, since you carry the jacket in your day pack to be prepared for sudden changes in weather.
  • A Sun Hat
  • A Woollen Hat
  • A pair of Gloves
  • A Head Torch
  • A Camera + extra Memory Cards 32 GB – above
  • Personal Water Bottle
  • Toiletries: Toothbrush and toothpaste, deodorant, wet wipes, a bit of extra toilet paper
