To start off with the UNESCO World Heritage Site, Kathmandu Durbar Square or locally known as Basantapur Durbar or Hanuman Dhoka, is one of the old durbar square in Kathmandu. Hanuman Dhoka was built during the Lichchhavi period (4th to 8th centuries AD), and King Pratap Malla extended the property significantly in the 17th century. The square is renowned for its stunning architecture, intricate or erotic wood carvings, and palaces that reflect the artistic prowess of the Malla and Shah dynasties that once ruled over the Kathmandu Valley.
Basantapur Durbar Square serves as a living museum of Nepalese art and architecture, offering visitors a glimpse into the country's illustrious past. These temples, dedicated to various Hindu gods and goddesses, showcase exquisite craftsmanship and intricate detailing. You can visit the handicraft shops nearby the courtyard for souvenirs. The Hanuman Dhoka Palace, from which the square derives one of its names, served as the royal residence of the Malla and Shah Kings. Today, it stands as a museum, offering visitors insights into Nepal's royal history and culture. Among the notable temples in the area are the Taleju Temple, Kumari Ghar (the residence of the Living Goddess Kumari), Kaal Bhairav Temple and Kasthamandap, which is believed to be built from the wood of a single tree.
