My trek was customized to my interest and requirements regarding the Khumbu Valley including The Gokyo Lakes, crossing the Renjo La Pass, through much of the valley, and a dramatic climb to Kongde Plateau. At my request Mountain Travel on this trek secured both guide and porter who assisted me on my first trek in Nepal last year. Also , during a trying period ending the trek due to prolonged rain and unseasonal snow Ashok worked tirelessly to aid in my departure. Then helping me through KTM airport and on to the next leg of my trip.

It was a fantastic trek. Everything worked from first contact with Ashok from home, to meeting him and guide Nima when I arrived in Nepal. The trek itself was well organized, Nima had checked everything and I felt very safe. We were gone for 14 days and Nima did everything to make sure I had the best trip. And it had I-- fantastic views and very varied. Nima also quickly understood what I was interested in, and showed among other things temples on the road, told about plants and we also visited a cheese factory. I can only recommend using Mountain Travel Nepal, you get both challenged and cared for, while being good company.

I also chose to pay for a carrier, which for me was a good choice and Kumar also helped make it a fantastic trip.

In April 2025 I returned again to Nepal to enjoy a short Trek (private arrangements) from Birethanti to Chitwan with Mountain Travel (MT). MT provided a Guide and Porter, with nightly accommodation in Mountain Lodges of Nepal.

I really enjoyed the trekking, with breath taking scenery, clear views of the highest of mountains, at my own pace, but with help from my guide, when I needed it. (I am a senior citizen!).

I had time when we arrived in the afternoons, to enjoy the beautifully decorated Lodges. To join other Trekkers in the Lounge/Dining spaces with warm pit fires and the conviviality of a drink before a delicious dinner. It was another wonderful experience in Nepal.

My Manaslu Circuit Trek in April: Clear Skies, Deep Valleys, and the Mighty Larkya La

I trekked the Manaslu Circuit in April, and it turned out to be one of the most intense and beautiful experiences I’ve ever had. I am a 50+ Taiwanese woman and this was my first time in the Himalayas.

April is a brilliant time to do this route—the skies were mostly clear, the temperatures were just right, and the rhododendrons were blooming in full force as we started in the lower valleys. But nothing quite prepares you for the raw scale of the mountains—or for the challenge that is Larkya La Pass.

Starting Low: Lush Trails and River Gorges

We kicked off our journey at Machha Khola, walking along the Budhi Gandaki River, weaving across countless suspension bridges, and moving through thick jungle and scattered villages. The early part of the trail followed the river along a deep valley—hot during the day, with the sounds of rushing water and birds in the trees. The villages of Jagat, Deng, and Namrung offered warm teahouse hospitality and a gradual buildup in altitude.

As we continued, the landscape shifted. By the time we reached Lho and Samagaon, everything opened up into wide valleys, and we were surrounded by snow-covered giants. Manaslu itself towered ahead, absolutely massive, glowing in the morning light. The views were sensational. My husband said they were better than the Khumbu.

Samagaon to Samdo: Getting High, Staying Slow

We did not take a rest day in Samagaon, hiking up to Pungyen Gompa, a windswept monastery with views of the glacier. This was a mistake and you should take time for this side trip.

Past Samdo, the landscape grew bleaker. No trees now—just stone, wind, and yaks. We made it to Dharamsala (Larkya Phedi), a small stone outpost where everyone hunkers down before the big push. It’s not comfortable—basic food, crowded dorms, and thin walls—but there’s a strange sense of camaraderie. Everyone knows what’s coming.

The Larkya La Pass: A Day I’ll Never Forget

We left around 4:30 a.m., bundled in layers and moving by headlamp. The cold hit hard that morning—my water bottle froze inside my pack. The trail starts off deceptively gentle, but it’s long, and the altitude makes everything harder. As the sun started to rise, the whole world turned blue and gold. Every breath was effort.

The final ascent to the pass was hard—a slow, grinding climb over snow and loose rocks. But when I reached the top of Larkya La (5,200m), I nearly cried. Flags flapped in the wind, and in every direction, mountains stood like frozen waves. I could see Himlung, Cheo Himal, and Annapurna II in the distance. All I could do was sit, breathless, and try to take it all in.

Down to Bimtang: A New World Below

The descent was steep and seemingly endless. My legs were jelly, and the melting snow made parts of the trail slippery. But as we dropped lower, color returned—patches of grass, alpine lakes, then pine trees. Bimtang felt like heaven: warmer air, soft beds, and hot soup.

The trail from Bimtang to Dharapani was a gentle goodbye—rhododendrons everywhere, waterfalls tumbling beside us, and birds calling through the trees. After so many days above 3,500 meters, it felt good to breathe deeply again.

The Importance of a Good Outfitter

One of the best decisions we made was going with a reliable trekking agency. We used Mountain Travel, and they were excellent from start to finish. Our guide was knowledgeable, calm under pressure, and deeply familiar with the region—especially the unpredictable conditions near the pass. The porters were incredibly strong and always cheerful, and the logistics (permits, transport, food) ran like clockwork. Having an experienced team made a huge difference, especially on the more remote and high-altitude stretches where self-guiding could have led to real trouble. When you’re pushing through snow at 5,000 meters, trust matters.

The Manaslu Circuit remains a quieter alternative to the more famous trekking routes, and that solitude became one of its greatest strengths. It offers a connection to nature and culture that feels authentic and unhurried, far from the busier trails of Annapurna or Everest.

April turned out to be an ideal month for the trek. The trails were lined with rhododendrons in full bloom, painting the hillsides in shades of red and pink against a backdrop of deep green forests. The weather stayed consistently clear, with moderate temperatures that made trekking comfortable and the mountain views unforgettable. Snow-capped giants like Mount Manaslu (8,163m), Himlung Himal, and Annapurna II dominated the skyline. Crossing the Larkya La Pass at 5,160 meters was the most demanding part of the trek, but the sweeping views from the top were well worth the effort.

Having an experienced guide made all the difference. Their knowledge of the trails, local customs, and the best strategies for acclimatization ensured that the journey went smoothly. It was my 5th trek with Mountain Travel and my 8th overall. I highly recommend them. You will understand why when you see other groups struggling over a snowy pass without crampons or dealing with the altitude.

Our guide did a great job and had contacts at the tea houses we stayed at, so we always got a nice room. I had injured my knee prior to the trek and it was not yet 100% and our guide helped me on some tricky downhill parts. Now my knee feels better than when I started the trek, in part to our guide helping me and taking it slow on the downhill portions. I will use Mountain Travel again if we return to Nepal. He had great trail knowledge. My daughter and I loved the trek, it was challenging, but the views were awesome.

It's difficult to describe my excellent experience. Mountain Travel Nepal took care of everything from the minute I stepped off the plane. Ashok met me at my hotel with some necessary gear and coordinated everything. Two fascinating tours of Kathmandu with Namuse, heli flights to and from Lukla, and the best guide in Nepal, Sherpa Ngawang Namgel, who even carried my pack when I was struggling. He took care of my every need and even took me to meet his family over lunch at his home. We really formed a special bond, and continue to correspond even now.

We had a great trek to Everest Base Camp in mid-April this year. Ashok and the team at Mountain Travel Nepal organised our trip to EBC. From the first enquiry to our return home they were quick and efficient. The staff were there to pick us up at Kathmandu airport, delivered us to our hotel, took us to the airport for the flight to Lukla , organised our guide and porter, duffel bag and sleeping bags. Our accommodation in guest houses and meals were all included. On our return to Kathmandu, Mountain Travel organised two days with a city tour guide at our request. They took us back to the airport for our return flight.

If we ever did another trip to Nepal we would definitely use Mountain Travel and recommend anyone travelling in Nepal to take advantage of their expertise. Cheers!

Went on a two-week solo trek to EBC and Gokyo with Mountain Travel Nepal. Received all the necessary information before departure and Ashok at the main office always replied swiftly to any emails. The actual trek already started out great, as the staff at Mountain Travel were able to secure me a coveted and rare high season plane ticket to Lukla directly from Kathmandu (not Manthali Ramechhap). My trekking guide Surendra was amazing. He stayed by my side at all times, closely monitored my health throughout the trek (really seemed to care too) and we adjusted the trek a little when I showed signs of altitude sickness. He was very knowledgeable about the area and always managed to find me great places to stay (often in relatively luxurious rooms with ensuite bathroom where available). Mountain Travel also supplied me with things like a warm sleeping bag, crampons to cross the Cho-La glacier, and the occasional medicine. I was worried before I left whether Mountain Travel would live up to their great website and promises, but now I can say I would gladly book another trekking with this company. As one of the oldest trekking companies in Nepal, it lives up to its reputation.

We used Mountain Travel for a 14 days Jiri to Tengboche trek in November 2023. We were blessed with very fine weather, excellent accommodations and a great team from Mountain Travel. This was my sixth trek in Nepal and my fourth with Mountain Travel. These have included several high peaks, as well as the standard Everest Base Camp journeys. I would never consider going with any other outfitter.

I did a 5 day trek, which i was told was a new route, in the Annapurna mountains. I requested something away from the crowds and normal tourist locations and that was certainly delivered. We hardly saw anyone, other than local villagers for about 3 days - this was fantastic.

The route itself was magical, hard work but magical. Lots of steep steps ascending over 2,300 meters in the three days (a lot of that going back down as well as up) to our highest point Mohare Danda. The views were incredible but be aware there are some very steep gradients and some quite large drop offs... not for the squeamish.

My guide Sulia and porter Ramon were superstars - they looked after me so well but also gave me space to be alone and take it all in. They met me at Pokhara airport and were with me all the way until back in Pokhara again. Both of them were extremely experienced and knew their way around very well, even though this was a relatively new route. The accommodations were basic but wonderful... a couple fo nights we stayed in some beautiful little houses and were looked after well by the families who were very happy and welcoming. The food was great and as well as the usual Dal Bhat (Veggie curry) there would option be other options like pasta or noodles.

We were lucky with the weather, not a drop of rain the whole time and although it got a little chilly at higher altitudes the weather was generally mild and comfortable.

I can wholeheartedly recommend this trip, a one in a lifetime experience for me that helped to create memories for ever.

"I recently returned to visit Nepal for a month in March/April 23 after a gap of about 40 years and used Mountain Travel Nepal again through Ashok Awal and his team to make ALL the arrangements.

We did the Manaslu Circuit expedition as part of a school age group and some teachers. The guides were incredibly helpful, knowledgeable and welcoming to us, assisting across all aspects of the trip. The porters were incredible, and they enabled us to have a comfortable ascent to the Larke Pass on the circuit. 10/10 experience overall!
